GeekList Item: Item for Geeklist “Solitaire Games On Your Table – May 2021”

imageSolitaire Games On Your Table – May 2021 – Trace(Rixte)United States Kansas City Kansas – RecommendWelcome to Solitaire Games On Your Table May 2021 Home of “Together, We Game Alone” Welcome to another month of solo gaming! I’m excited to be hosting for 1 Player Guild’s Solitaire Games on Your Table (SGOYT) geeklist for May! It’s one of my favorite (and one of the most dangerous!) places on the Internet and always makes me excited to try new games.I can’t wait to find out what you’ll have hitting the table this month! Whether you’re an old salt or brand new, this is the place to share and comment.Because we might be playing solo, but we’re in it together! Guidelines Play a solo game, a solo variant, or a multiplayer game solo.Add an entry to this GeekList and tell us about it.Get the most out of the SGOYT Aggregator by using at least one of the following tags: Add the tag to include a short overview. All summaries are recorded, as on this user overview page.Add the tag to rate a game on a scale of 0.5 to 5.0.Only the most recent rating for a game is recorded, as on this ratings page.

It’s extremely helpful (but not mandatory) to include some and describing the pros and cons of the game you played. They’re great visual aids to summarize your post.

In other words – be better than ME, peeps! Need a little help with formatting? Check out the Forum Formatting Guide and Tricks of the Geek.About ME! Hi everyone! My name is Trace – or Rixte, I’ll answer to either – and I’ve been an avid solo gamer for just over two years, once I stumbled across this guild and this list and fell down the rabbit hole of gaming.I live in the Kansas City metro area and I’m a copywriter for a niche ad agency.

But THERE I have a proofer, so the typos are gonna happen sometimes! I have two Bengal cats (Saffron and Basil) that are ALSO avid gamers, or at least their frequent insertion into my gaming scenarios seems to indicate as much.Sometimes they’re my enemy, sometimes they’re my allies, they always mean I’m playing on Challenge Mode.

They usually pop up in images of my gameplay and I expect we’ll all see them quite a bit this month.Speaking of challenges …this Month’s Theme is: CHALLENGE YOURSELF! So, last year in May, I joined a Game-A-Day-in-May Monthly Challenge – a prompt was given each day, and I had to find and play a game that would fit it.I LOVED it.

I’d signed up for a few challenges impulsively at the end of 2019 – including a 20×20 I really didn’t think I’d actually finish but I wanted to stretch myself – but this May challenge is the first one that really brought me joy (and lots of participation in this list!) So I thought that celebrating that on the year anniversary would be fitting.Of course, the challenge you do is up to you! Maybe you didn’t quite manage to knock off a FORGOTTEN GAME off last month, but you still want to? Here’s a second chance! Want to play a 5×5 this month? Or a game every day? How about try one of the many solo challenges for individual games – linked in the resource list at the bottom of this post? This month is all about STRETCHING.If you’ve already signed up for some challenges – personal or a community challenge – I’d love to hear an update on how it’s going as we approach the halfway mark of 2021.I’ll be working on my own challenges right alone with you (see what I did there?) Also, I love to cook, so I challenge anyone interested to give me favorite recipes – I’m always looking for inspiration! Oh, and naturally there will be bonus points* for pictures with pets, so keep them coming – particularly if they’re upping your game to Challenge Mode! *All points are awarded at Rixte’s whim.Points may or may not be recorded.Points not redeemable for cash or prizes.

But of course, sticking to this theme isn’t required! Whatever you choose to do, I’m excited to read about it.Upcoming SGOYT Hosts Keeping the party going will be some great future hosts that I guarantee will be amazing …JUNETheo PetersCanada Edmonton Alberta AND JULYMonica Elida Forssell(Elida)Norway SandnesTake your marks! Board Game: Timeline Challenge [Average Rating:7.05 Overall Rank:1703] [Average Rating:7.05 Unranked] – – Trace(Rixte)United States Kansas City Kansas – Looking for some challenge inspiration?! Several people have already set up some amazing challenges for themselves, but I was encouraged to set some prompts up (and let’s face it, it took VERY little encouragement) so that if you’re just looking for some ideas and want the fun of the hunt of finding a game that fits …Here you go! Bonus points* for playing on the exact date, but I believe in celebrating WHEN you can so of course you also get points for playing a game anytime in its week.May 1 – 7 May 1 is May Day – play a game that celebrates flowers or planting or parades! May 2 is World Laughter Day – play a game that’s silly or makes you laugh.May 3 is Lumpy Rug Day – I did not make this up.

SOMEBODY probably did, but it was not me! Play a game on the carpet OR play a game with dice, because we know those suckers don’t stay on the table! May 4 is, of course, Star Wars Day – play a Star Wars-themed game – or any game set in space! May 5 is Cinco de Mayo – play a game set in Mexico OR play a war/battle game that you win …or lose.May 6 is Beverage Day! – Play a game where you make or serve a beverages …OR simply enjoy one while you’re playing the game (SAFETY FIRST! Guard those components!) May 7 is …No Pants Day? If we DO, let’s not say we did.Instead, let’s go back into space with International Space Day! May 8 – 14 May 8 is Mother Ocean Day! Play a game on or under the ocean.

Or you know, play a game that takes PLACE on or under the ocean, if you don’t feel like dragging out the yacht or scuba gear.May 9 is Mother’s Day! Play a game with a mother in it or that has a theme you know your mom would love (even if she doesn’t play games herself, I’m looking at YOU, Trace’s Mom) May 10 is National Shrimp Day in the US! Break out that Fleet: The Dice Game! OR play any game with tiny components.

May 11 is National Twilight Zone Day – play a game that’s just weird.

May 12 is …wait for it …LIMERICK DAY! When you post your playthrough, why not try to come up with an AABBA rhyme to describe it? There once was a challenge by Trace That made me feel slapped in the face I had to find time To come up with a rhyme Before she could get on my case (that’s really hard! Any form of poetry will receive half points) May 13 is Frog Jumping Day.

Play a game with frogs, or where pieces jump over each other or that makes you feel cold-blooded! May 14 is …

Chicken Dance and Buttermilk Biscuits? I am at a loss. Therefore it’s International-Play-What-You-Want-Day! (if Lumpy Rug guy can randomly declare, so can I!) May 15 – 21 May 15 is Astronomy Day.GET BACK IN SPACE, PEOPLE!! Also for those of you who hate space, it’s Bring Flowers to Someone Day – so play a game with flowers.Space flowers.May 16 is International Pickle Day.Play a game with some zing! May 17 is National Pack Rat Day – so gosh darn it, play a game off your Shelf of Shame or Opportunity.OR play a game pulled from the bottom of a stack of games! May 18 is Dinosaur Day!!! Do it.

Play a game with dinosaurs.OR play one of the oldest games in your collection.May 19 is Plant Something Day.Play a game in which you plant something OR go wild and actually plant something. In real life. That’s a thing, right? May 20 is Weights and Measures Day.Play a game that you feel is very balanced OR that requires precision.

May 21 is Endangered Species Day – Play a game with wild animals OR wild plants in it.Insects count, too! May 22 – 28 May 22 is International Heritage Breeds Day so play a farming game! May 23 is International Turtle Day – Play a game with turtles OR hole up in your game space shell and play a nice long game! May 24 is Scavenger Hunt Day! Play a game where you have to keep your eye out for opportunities …

or go find that game you know is SOMEWHERE in your house and you just can’t remember where.

Then play it.May 25 is Geek Pride Day.Board Game Geeks unite, play a game that you love.May 26 is World Dracula Day – play a supernatural or horror game May 27 is Nothing to Fear Day.

That’s to make yourself feel better after yesterday’s horror day.Play a soothing, meditative game …

or play a game in which you bravely go forth, afraid of nothing (don’t die!) May 28 is European Neighbor’s Day! Play a Euro OR play a game set in Europe.May 29 – 31 May 29 is End of the Middle Ages Day (I did not know that was a thing, did anyone know that was a thing?!) – play a game set in the middle ages.I believe March’s SGOYT will have some great suggestions! May 30 is …

wait for it …International Hug Your Cat Day! of COURSE that is what I am picking.

Play a game with cats or with hugs or you know, that you think I would love.Because I would make a good cat.I’ve been practicing my napping.

May 31 is National Smile Day and I want us all to leave the month smiling, so play a favorite game.In space.Don’t listen to me.It does not have to be in space.

WHEW.

(My apologies for the fact that this is a fairly US-centric list, I know that there are probably some GREAT days elsewhere that are actual legit holidays and that I just don’t know about them! So if you have an alternative suggestion for any of these days, leave a comment! More options just means more games get to have their day in the sun) *Again, and I can not stress this enough, these points are NOT redeemable for cash. But they might make you FEEL** like a million bucks? **Papery, split into a bunch of pieces and shoved in a suitcase. These points really are worthless.

Board Game: Chai: Tea for 2 [Average Rating:8.07 Unranked] [Average Rating:8.07 Unranked] – – Fredrik SchulzSweden I have been solo playing a lot of Chai: Tea for 2.

This is the 1 – 2 player sequel to Chai which is heading to Kickstarter soon.Chai: Tea for 2 is a racing game where you are trying to load enough ships with tea leaves before your solo opponent.Dice are used to represent workers which in turn are allocated to the five areas of the board to perform various actions. It’s quick, it’s cheerful and the components and artwork are quite amazing. The solo mode is fairly simply in terms of upkeep with minor exception to how target priority is resolved but that is still subject to change.

GeekList: The Freewheelin’ Jaap Willem – – JW van der Meulen(jwml)Netherlands Almerewww.solitairetimes.net – Sure, I’m in! Just one thing.

I said in my personal Geeklist “2021: No goals. No challenges.” So…Please don’t let anyone know I’m here.edited 1 May: Alright then, this is going to take up some space.

Let me introduce myself.I am JW and I am challenged.I am also, coincidentally or not, completely addicted to challenges.I’ve done many in the past years, from completing goals in a specific game to playing 19 games 19 times in 2019, playing 100 different goals solo in a year or learning to play a new game every week, you name it.And then I hit a wall.Real life got in the way, and I could not complete most challenges I’d started.

And I felt sad about it, and I felt guilty playing something else, because I “had to” work on the challenges.Poor me.So this year I quit them, cold turkey. No challenges, no goals.

Except, I miss them. Now I quit smoking over ten years ago, and what I allowed myself since is to buy one pouch of rolling tobacco a year, and smoke one weekend long.Like crazy. So I will take a leaf out of this book in May and allow myself one month of challenges.

I’ll go totally beserk. And I am pretty sure I’ll fail some, but I won’t beat myself up about it.But just inhale deeply and enjoy every second.TEN CHALLENGES FOR MAY 2021 As you can see below, the main focus is on playing my games more often.[1.] 10 x 10 hardcore challenge One thing I don’t think I ever managed, was to complete a “hardcore” 10×10 in a year (where you have to pick the games beforehand). So that’s the first plan.

Except this time in a month, of course.Aeon’s End: Legacy Apex Theropod Jump Drive Legendary Encounters: Predator Marvel Champions Nusfjord Onirim Pocket Landship Sunset over Water Wipers Salient + Desolate (in reserve) [2.] Get my H-index from 36 to 38 15 to 25 plays, depending on the games Two games in the 10×10 will bring me closer to this goal already.

Then perhaps some Loyang and Glass Road.[3.] Get my solo H-index from 30 to 32 20 to 44 plays, depending on the games Again, two games in the 10×10 will bring me closer to this goal already. Then hopefully I’ll play some Eldritch Horror. It takes ages to set up, but it’s so worth it.

[4.] Get 5 games to 5 plays 5 to 9 plays, depending on the games Funny enough this may turn out to be a hard one, as I usually play games I like more often. So the ones that are under four plays probably had some kind of problem for me.[5.] Get 5 games to 10 plays 8 to 12 plays, depending on the games Same here. There is a reason why I didn’t play them often.I hope to be proven wrong this month.[6.] Get 5 games to 25 plays 10 to 19 plays, depending on the games This one’s completely doable.

I like most games that are close to 25.Except for Wingspan.

But I promised Derek to play it.

[7.] Get 3 games to 50 plays 18 to 29 plays, depending on the games I put some of these in the 10×10.No, that isn’t cheating.[8.] Get 1 game to 100 plays 4 to 14 plays, depending on the games Terraforming Mars just needs four plays. If I feel like playing Elder Sign, I’ve got 14 to go.Hmm.

Which one will it be? Yes.Elder Sign can wait.[9.] Play 5 unplayed games 5 plays For this challenge there are over 30 games on my shelf to choose from.I am a firm believer in retail therapy. So sue me.

[10.] Win a game of Underwater Cities, my most recent aquisition So in theory this would be a minimum of 1 play, but somewhere between 5 and 10 looks more likely.I enjoy the game, but it turns out I am not good at counting.Right.What else do we have? BONUS Beat Jason at his own game Join in on Rixte’s daily challenges 15 themes | 25 themes | 31 themes Play a game a day 15 days | 25 days | 31 days SGOYT I really should be a little more sociable again.Host a month of SGOYT I’ve signed up for August.Write posts again This graph speaks for itself. It’s been a year.

I always like to create some mini challenges for myself.I’ll be a bit busy this month and my birthday is coming up at the end of the month as well so I’ll try to keep the list short and add more stuff if time permits. There’s three ongoing challenges for the year I am participating in: 1) Play Friday every last Friday of the month.4/12 done.2) Item for Geeklist “2021 Challenge: Raise your H-Index” 3) Item for Geeklist “2021 20 Centuries Challenge” I think the H-index challenge is going well and I’ll get that done by the end of the year.I’ve technically already completed it as I raised my index from 17 to 18 but my goal is 23 so there’s a bit of work to do.The centuries is going ok but will be tricky to complete and require the purchase of some games (or some PnP-ing) but I’m hopeful.I’m doing both of these solo games only (even though I do count non-solo stuff from the past for the index) — New challenges for the month The Forgotten: Nations Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game The Narrative: Shadowrun Crossfire: Prime Runner Edition New Games: Kanban EV Marvel Champions: The Card Game – The Galaxy’s Most Wanted No Solo in the Box: KeyForge: Call of the Archons The Quacks of Quedlinburg The Castles of Burgundy Century: Golem Edition – – Edited Fri Apr 30, 2021 8:58 amPosted Fri Apr 30, 2021 8:57 amSubscribeComment Die Rolls – [+] Dice rolls Loading…

Thank you, Rixte, for hosting this month and putting so much effort, passion and humor into it! I’ve had a few lot of ideas for personal challenges. But frankly, the past 14 months have been very challenging already, and my ressources are running low. Also, I hate losing challenges, so I know I shouldn’t commit to too much – on the other hand, it’s no challenge if it’s easy or a foregone conclusion.So.I’ll do 4 small-ish challenges instead of big ones.I toned down the required numbers as well. This is a challenge, but doable I hope.

Complete at least 4 of Traces challenges this month! I would have said 3, to stay realistic, but I will count games played with someone else.It doesn’t explicitly say “solo” in the challenge Take part in the May Roll Player solo challenge.Paint miniatures at least one time in May! This I always want to do but never find the time! But miniature games are coming (via KS) and I want to finish Lords of Hellas and some other projects, first.Play 2 games that are new to me/unplayed, and 2 games I haven’t played this year (but are not new to me). Here are some games I think I could play for the first challenge (I left out a few of the Wild Card days Trace thankfully included in the challenge as well ):Quote:May 1 is May Day – play a game that celebrates flowers or planting or parades! – That is tomorrow! My game of choice would be to play Tussie Mussie with my wife.

Alternatively, if we have the evening to ourselves, we could finally get Papillon to the table.

May 3 is Lumpy Rug Day – I did not make this up.SOMEBODY probably did, but it was not me! Play a game on the carpet OR play a game with dice, because we know those suckers don’t stay on the table! – Feels like almost a wild card! Monday evening …I guess Roll Player and One Deck Dungeon are my solo candidates for this.May 6 is Beverage Day! – Play a game where you make or serve a beverages …

OR simply enjoy one while you’re playing the game (SAFETY FIRST! Guard those components!) – There is one game I have where beverages make an appearance: The Dragon & Flagon! I don’t think I’ll have a game night next thursday, though May 8 is Mother Ocean Day! Play a game on or under the ocean.Or you know, play a game that takes PLACE on or under the ocean, if you don’t feel like dragging out the yacht or scuba gear.

– I got Jaws! But again, not a solo game, probably not gonna hapen that saturday…May 13 is Frog Jumping Day.

Play a game with frogs, or where pieces jump over each other or that makes you feel cold-blooded! – Flip Over Frog Perfect May 16 is International Pickle Day.Play a game with some zing! – It’s also my wife’s birthday. We’ll probably play something in the evening when the kids are all in bed, and the zing will be contributed by my wife! May 17 is National Pack Rat Day – so gosh darn it, play a game off your Shelf of Shame or Opportunity.OR play a game pulled from the bottom of a stack of games! – love it! Monday night is often solo game night, so I think I might find something at the bottom of a stack May 19 is Plant Something Day.Play a game in which you plant something OR go wild and actually plant something. In real life. That’s a thing, right? – I don’t know if I have a game like that, I need to look.

But, it’s also my birthday and on wednesday nights, I often play with my wife.Maybe we’ll play a two player deduction game and I’ll plant some wrong leads in her head…May 26 is World Dracula Day – play a supernatural or horror game – I got a few of those, though I recently sold Machina Arcana (Second/Third Edition) 2nd.

or play a game in which you bravely go forth, afraid of nothing (don’t die!) – Tranquility seems to fit nicely in this challenge.May 29 is End of the Middle Ages Day (I did not know that was a thing, did anyone know that was a thing?!) – play a game set in the middle ages.- I also have a few of those, Alhambra is the first one to come to mind (although I’m not even sure if that’s set in the Middle Ages or before…) – – Edited Fri Apr 30, 2021 2:33 pmPosted Fri Apr 30, 2021 12:30 pmSubscribeComment Die Rolls – [+] Dice rolls Loading…| Locked Hide Show Unlock Lock Comment » {{data.config.endpage}} {{error.message}} – – – [ShowHide] Thank you for helping us moderate the site.[Community Rules]EditedPostedReplyQuoteEditDelete {{comment.error.message}} – 11.Board Game: Cowboys II: Cowboys & Indians Edition [Average Rating:7.13 Unranked] – – Jay JasperUnited States New Mexico – Got this recently, and have been waiting to dig in.

The SO is gone for a few days, the weather went to crap, so seemed like a perfect time to have a shoot out.I got this because, while I love Shadows of Brimstone: City of the Ancients, it’s a bear to transport and set up, and I am hoping this will be a quicker and easier game to travel with, and play.

Not that I’m abandoning SoB, but it’s a weekend affair, and sometimes I just don’t have the time or the space.First…unboxing.Components are nice, artwork is meh.A real missed opportunity here in the characters…one anonymous woman referred to as ‘Blondie’ (What?! No Belle Starr? No Calamity Jane?!), one buffalo soldier, one slouchy, sullen looking Native American, and one Mexican in a sombrero.

Even a quick little bit of research would have given us actual historical characters for those.Meanwhile, white dudes are recognizable as Wyatt Earp, Buffalo Bill, the Stranger from a ‘Fistful of Dollars’, Shane, and Johnny Ringo, as well as a Confederate and Union soldier.Really, folks, really?! And this is truly wince-able depiction of what I assume is a Native American: Yeesh.Ok, onwards…the components are good quality, I like the idea of the standees over miniatures for traveling.

Unfortunately, there really isn’t anything to distinguish one character from the next, they all have identical player boards with only the artwork differing. Now, that’s partially mitigated in the scenario instructions, but it does seem like another missed opportunity.Still, it does keep things simple, and that is one of the promises of this game.I didn’t try the solo rules, but it’s basically a small chart for the AI.

It’s really not adequate to the game…for example, if the opponent is armed with a pistol and is 3-4 movement spaces away, they take 2 shots. But too many times there was no line of sight, so then what? It’s not really covered. So I played 2-handed, which was easy enough, and let me use the deck of cards, which make things much more interesting.Solo doesn’t use the cards.I’ve only played the first scenario, but I did play it 3 times, so I have a pretty good understanding of at least that one.

Player #1’s goal is to stay alive for 12 rounds, while Player #2 has two characters with which to try and kill Player #1’s character. Each character starts with 4 action points…1 AP to move, 2 AP to shoot. And AP level is also one’s health. One hit and that’s a severe limitation! Player #1 never did make it out alive, the best she did was manage to kill both opponents before expiring dramatically, bleeding out in the street.Still lots to explore, but issues aside, I enjoyed the game.

It’s light, it’s quick, and it will travel easily.I just need to fix this art.Use some of my minis from SoB when I’m home.

And the terrain tiles will be handy for Dracula’s America: Shadows of the West. And this let me move closer to completing my 3-in-1 and Creative Pairs challenges.

So here are my goals: Complete the Gaming Challenge Community’s GCC May Monthly Challenge: Spring Challenge – This month we are playing games that focus on plants.

This could be flowers, trees, herbs, farming, etc.I’m going for Normal.

(I don’t even enough qualifying games for Hard since they have to be unique for that!) Participate in my OWN May Calendar challenge.Oh dear. What have I done? I’ll shoot for all 31 days, but play the variant of ‘anytime during its week’.Good thing there’s no restriction on duplicate plays! A considerate person must have thought that up.Up my H-Index to 21 …THIS MONTH!! I’ve been hovering at 20 since December …

the big issue is that one of the games that is a 20marker is Legacy of Dragonholt and I don’t want to restart it yet.My next highest is 16! Complete my May plays for the 2021 Creative 12×12 Challenge(12 unique games to fit 12 prompts- this one should auto-complete if I manage to get a big chunk of my other challenges done) Make PROGRESS on 21 unplayed in 2021 – as of tomorrow I’ll have 11 to go.I’d like to knock out 4 new games this month, doubling my usual 2.Make PROGRESS on 21 unplayed in 2021 – this is a challenge with 52 prompts, each game played must be unique.

I haven’t actually gone through and starting assigning games I’ve played this year to most of the prompts, because I don’t want to box myself in.But it’s time to get moving and start assigning! Make PROGRESS on 2021 Animal Challenge – same situation, I am kind of hoarding the animals since it’s another unique game situation. And lastly: Have fun with you guys all month!
